How Instagram handles photo dimensions

Instagram’s photo-resolution guidance for its iPhone and Android apps says photos keep their original resolution when they are 320–1080 px wide and have an aspect ratio between 1.91:1 and 3:4. Unsupported ratios are cropped; images narrower than 320 px are enlarged to 320 px, and those wider than 1080 px are reduced to 1080 px.

This tool’s 1080 × 1350, 4:5 preset falls within that range; it is not the only supported portrait ratio. At 1080 px wide, Instagram lists heights of 566–1440 px. Use the latest Instagram app and check the upload preview.

Choose the framing before the quality

Place the subject inside the crop with room for edges and important text. Review all images in a series together so that a person or product does not jump abruptly between frames. Only then adjust compression and compare the result.

Keep a separate Story crop

The same photograph can work in both places, but a wider portrait crop and a full-height Story reveal different parts of it. Start from the source again instead of repeatedly cropping a previously exported JPEG.

Frequently asked questions

Is 4:5 the tallest portrait ratio Instagram supports?

No. The photo guidance supports up to 3:4, or 1440 px high at 1080 px wide. This page still defaults to 1080 × 1350 at 4:5, which falls within the supported range.

Does this tool publish to Instagram?

No. It exports a JPEG to your device. Upload that file yourself and check the final placement in the app.

Can I choose another aspect ratio?

Yes. You can switch to a square or another preset in the tool. This page starts at 4:5. Check Instagram’s upload preview for the post you are preparing.
